The Wolf is at the Door
The IPCC reports, "Leave no room for doubt. Global warming is a fact!"
Global warming may have been observed by our former Vice President in the 1970s but he certainly didn't invent it. Thanks to the Industrial Revolution and our daily lifestyles, the planet is getting hotter at a rate too close for comfort. Beyond the obvious signs of melting polar ice caps and winters that sport 60-degree days, climates are changing in unexpected ways all around the world.
From sandstorms in China to the depletion of Lake Mead and other worldwide water sources, the impact of human consumption and convenience can be felt everywhere. Don't be fooled by complacent political leaders who blame the cyclical changes of Mother Nature and shun all personal responsibility. Just as spending money foolishly adds up over time and results in long-term debt, so does waste and excessive human consumption wreak havoc on the environment.
The Time for Change is Now
Global warming is no longer a myth and thinking 'green' is becoming in vogue. Companies are beginning to realize that there's money to be made in recycling, eliminating plastic bags, reusing, and seeking alternative energy sources. Automobile manufacturers are scrambling to meet hybrid car demands and prove their planet-friendly worthiness to the public. Waste companies are frantically trying to figure out ways of converting landfill gases into reliable energy sources. Scientists are scratching their heads trying to come up with creative ways of using the sun's rays for power. Cities are turning off their lights in an effort to cut down on heat and power usage.
There's a Lot You Can Do
Your initial gut reaction might be, "What can I do? I'm only one person!" You'd be surprised how many small changes you can make that will add up to energy savings, heat reduction, and much more.
Tips on Reducing Global Warming:
-
Install New Light bulbs - CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lights) are the way to go. I know you've heard this before but watch this video and you'll be convinced why you should.
-
Change Your Toilet Paper - As deforestation increases and the population grows, it only makes sense to use recycled paper wherever we can. We are literally cutting down trees and throwing the paper in the toilet. Seventh Generation and other companies are producing toilet paper made from 100% recycled paper that looks and feels like its environmentally-unfriendly counterpart. Learn more...
-
Turn Off Your Water - Especially when brushing your teeth and washing dishes, stop running water when you don't need it.
-
Stop Idling! Your car produces 32% more GHG (greenhouse gases) when idling than when driving. At the bank machine, when picking someone up, or waiting in your car for other reasons, turn off the engine!
-
Recycle Everything and Anything You Can - When it comes to paper products, cans, jars, plastic bags, and more, most of your garbage can be recycled.
-
Bring Your Own Bags - Those supermarket and retail plastic bags are death to the environment. Now you can get good quality, canvas bags and bring them with you. Europe has been doing this for decades!
-
Give it Away - Instead of putting that old couch or bookcase by the curb, donate it to a local school or home. If you don't, it will just end up in a landfill.
-
Visit a Landfill - Once you see how disgusting these waste dump sites are, you'll think twice before dropping something in your garbage can.
-
Participate in Earth Hour - Every March, usually at the end of the month, for one hour, individuals, companies, schools, cities, and people all over the earth are turning off their lights for one hour. Learn more...
Knowledge is Power
Your individual efforts really can make a difference. From simple measures such as turning off lights when you leave the room to composting your food scraps and not idling in your car, the solution to global warming is all around us.
